I’ve been host and facilitator of a conversation “salon” of sorts for nearly 20 years now. We’re not really the “intellectual gatherings” of past eras, but more a friendly group of interesting people who want to listen and share ideas. It’s relaxing and fun, and it has truly been one of the joys of my life.
Every other month or so I email a flyer to the Merry Band with a topic and some points to consider for conversation. Watch for future blogs — I’ll post some of my past flyers. Those who can attend let me know, and we get together on a Saturday evening for discussion. Participants can contribute food or drink, but it’s not necessary. It’s that easy!
The makeup of the group is ever-changing, but we do have some stalwarts who have been with us from the beginning. Originally, I found members by advertising (under “Friends”) in our local newspaper. I also posted an advertisement at the local library and on various bulletin boards around town. Today, you might find a conversation salon (or start one of your own) through Meetup (Meetup.com).
